Introduction:
Cybercrime is on the rise in Nepal, posing a serious threat to everyone who uses the internet. With inadequate resources and laws, the situation is getting worse. According to the Kathmandu Post, in the past eight months alone, the Nepal Cyber Bureau has recorded a staggering 4,937 cases, surpassing the total from the previous fiscal year.
Major Incidents:
Earlier this year, Nepal faced its biggest cyberattack, disrupting hundreds of government websites and even halting international travel. Cybercriminals are now using popular platforms like TikTok for online gambling and luring individuals for illegal activities.
Top Cybercrimes:
Financial frauds, including phishing and lottery scams, topped the list with 955 cases. ‘Revenge porn’ and fake social media profiles came second and third, with 901 and 898 complaints, respectively.
Recent Arrests:
In March, the Valley Crime Investigation Office arrested 19 individuals, including nine Chinese nationals, for online fraud. The culprits used Telegram to deceive people into investing in commodities.
Prevalent Issues:
Cases of online blackmailing (799), online defamation (700), online harassment (648), and online child sexual abuse (36) have surged, causing distress among the victims.
Challenges Faced:
The Nepal Cyber Bureau, despite receiving 60-70 complaints daily, is understaffed with only 20 personnel equipped to handle cybercrime cases. The existing laws, like the Electronic Transaction Act of 2008, fall short in addressing emerging cyber threats.
Lack of Awareness and Prevention:
The growing problem stems from the state’s shortsighted cyber policies. To combat cybercrimes effectively, experts suggest a nationwide awareness campaign starting from schools. Training digital forensic experts and establishing units in all seven provinces and district police offices are crucial steps.
Call to Action:
As cybercrimes can happen to anyone, it’s essential to be cautious online. Avoid sharing personal information, clicking on unknown links, and falling for fraudulent schemes. If you encounter suspicious activity, report it promptly to the authorities.
Conclusion:
The alarming increase in cybercrime requires immediate attention. By staying informed, raising awareness, and taking preventive measures, we can collectively work towards creating a safer online environment for everyone in Nepal. Stay vigilant, stay safe!
