Confuse about the Lhosar ?

‘Lo’ means ‘new’ and ‘sar’ means ‘year’. Losar is celebrated in Nepal, China, Tibet, India, Bhutan, and Sikkim. It is one of the major festivals and also the Tibetan new year. The holiday is celebrated on various dates depending on location (Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, India) tradition. In Nepal, mostly the Gurung, Lama, Tamang, and Sherpa communities celebrate the festival.

Losar is typically celebrated in late January or early February. In Kathmandu, people go to Tudikhel to celebrate Losar wearing their ethnic dress. Gurung, Tamang, and Sherpa community have their own traditional dress.  The festival is a time for families to gather together, exchange gifts, and participate in traditional customs and rituals. The celebrations typically include religious ceremonies, dancing, and feasting.

There are several different Lhosar festivals celebrated in Nepal, each with its own unique customs and traditions.

Some of the most significant Lhosar festivals include:

Tamu Lhosar(Gurung Lhosar):

In Nepal, Gurung community celebrates this festival. Gurungs separate the period into 12-year periods (Lohokor), which are called Barga (lho).

Sonam Lhosar(Tamang Lhosar):

In Nepal, Tamang community celebrates this festival. It typically falls in late February or early March.

Gyalpo Lhosar (Sherpa Lhosar):

In Nepal, Sherpa community celebrates this festival. It is also a celebration of the Tibetan New Year. Sherpa, Tamang, Bhutia, and Yolmo celebrate the Losar festivals. This Losar is celebrated for almost 2 weeks. During the first three days, major celebrations take place.

Maghe Sankranti:

This is a Hindu festival that marks the start of the Nepali month of Magh and is celebrated on January 14. Tharu people celebrate this particular day as a new year. It is also regarded as the major annual festival of the Magar community. They invite their married daughters to their homes for the festivities. Delicious food and sweet potatoes are eaten on this auspicious occasion in all parts of Nepal by all communities.

Lhosar is also a time for forgiveness and setting new goals for the coming year. It is considered an auspicious time for making new beginnings and wishing for good fortune in the year ahead.
