10th day of Dashain: Bada Dashain

Hindus across the country and abroad celebrated Bijaya Dashami (Bada Dashain), a cultural and religious festival. On the auspicious day of Bijaya Dashami, Nepalis living in Nepal and abroad received ‘tika,’ ‘jamara,’ and blessings.

During the Bijaya Dashami Festival, elders are given ‘tika’ and ‘jamara’ as auspicious items bestowed by the goddesses Nawa Durga, Mahakali, Mahalaxmi, and Mahasaraswati.

There is historical evidence that the festival of Bada dashain is celebrated as the triumph of divine power over truth and demonic power over untruth.
On this occasion, on the occasion of Navratri, offerings are made on Kojagrat Purnima after reciting Durga Saptashati Chandi and Bhagwati’s hymns in various Shakti Peeths and Dasanghars every day from Ghatsthapana for nine days.

Tika’ is a combination of red vermillion powder and curd that is applied to the forehead as a sign of victory and good luck. Similarly, ‘jamara’ are maize or barley shoots that are specifically germinated for the Dashain festival.

Dashami, or the tenth day of the Bada Dashain festival, is considered the most important day of the festival, as it represents the triumph of truth over evil.Tika is offered through the chanting of a special manta.
