Supreme Court Investigates Legalization

The Supreme Court in Kathmandu has ordered an investigation into the government’s reasons for making a law to regulate ganja in Nepal. Rigendra Giri, the President of Nepal Farm Traders Association, filed a petition seeking the legalization of ganja. The government, under the Drug Control Act 2033, faces opposition from 13 government bodies for the regulation and cultivation of ganja for medicinal and industrial purposes.

Ganja legalization has been a debated issue in Nepal. Nepal debates Ganja legalization. Advocates are pointing to its medical benefits and potential to reduce the black market. Opponents argue it could increase drug abuse and pose safety concerns. Many countries, including the US, Canada, and Uruguay, have already legalized ganja for medical or recreational purposes.

Why Legalization?

  • It has positive effects on public health
  • It reduces drug-related arrests
  • It provides people with access to safer, regulated products

The Supreme Court’s investigation could lead to the legalization of ganja in Nepal. The implications of the investigation are still unknown. It remains to be seen how the government will respond to the investigation’s findings.
