At the Supreme Court the mayor of Kathmandu is accused of contempt. Balendra Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, has been given a show-cause notice by the Supreme Court requesting a written response regarding a contempt of court case brought by attorney Deepak Raj Joshi.
After hearing the case, Justice Hari Krishna Karki’s single bench on Monday ordered the defendant, Shah, to submit a written explanation within seven days, either directly or via his representative.
On August 18, Attorney Joshi filed a contempt of court lawsuit against Mayor Shah at the Supreme Court.
By giving a 24-hour deadline, the City attempted to demolish the Norvic International Hospital’s illegally built structure in Thapathali on August 9. However, it went back on its decision and established a committee to look into the alleged encroachment.
Later, the Supreme Court issued an interlocutory order not to remove the structures constructed by the hospital, forcing the committee to halt its work.
Then, on August 10, Mayor Shah posted on Facebook that she was asking for a constitutional amendment that would give the Supreme Court complete authority over approving building designs and taking action against illegal constructions.
Joshi had brought the case against Shah before the Supreme Court, alleging that his response in the open forum amounted to contempt of court.

The court had stopped the metropolitan city from demolishing a portion of the Norvic Hospital structure after determining it was constructed illegally. After that, Shah objected by saying the court should be given the responsibility of approving building blueprints.
Shah was given seven days to submit his response after the court heard the case.
