Although the sugarcane crushing season began in mid-November, farmers are still waiting for the government to announce the minimum support price.

Sarlahi sugarcane farmers filed a memorandum to Indu Shankar Sugar Mill on Sunday, requesting Rs705 per quintal for their sugarcane for this crushing season.

The government raised the minimum support price of sugarcane by 8.39 percent last year, to Rs590 per quintal.

The floor price is the minimal price farmers receive for their products, and it is usually publicized prior to harvest based on Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development guidelines.

According to him, it is difficult to obtain subsidized fertilizer, the cost of diesel has skyrocketed, the cost of plowing a field has doubled, agricultural salaries have tripled, and transportation costs have more than doubled.
