How is GPA calculated?
GPA is an abbreviation for Grade Point Average, which is calculated by adding all of your grades and then dividing them by the number of credits you have taken. In other words, it is the average of your grades divided by the number of credit hours you have spent on the subject. Having said that, not all GPAs are the same, or, to put it another way, not all GPAs have the same scale.
The traditional GPA scale is 4.0, whereas the newer unweighted GPA scale is 5.0.Nepal employs the traditional 4.0 GPA.
There are two formulas for How to calculate the GPA of a subject.
- The formula to calculate GPA for Subjects without practical Marks: (Theory Marks x Theory Credit Hours) / Total Credit Hours
- The formula to calculate the GPA of a subject with Practical Marks: [ (theory Marks x Theory Credit Hours) + (practical Marks x Practical Credit Hours)] / Total Credit Hours
- From these formulas, we can derive the general formula for calculating the GPA as: Total Points Earned/ Total credits attempted
