A 27-year-old man was charged with rapecase of a 10-year-old girl on Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio’s Franklin County Municipal Court.
Gerson Fuentes, 27, was arrested on Wednesday in Franklin County Municipal Court in Columbus. He was charged with raping a child under the age of 13, a crime punishable by life in prison. He was held on a $2 million bond.
During the hearing, a police investigator testified that Fuentes admitted to raping the girl at least twice. The officer testified that the victim in the case had an abortion in neighboring Indiana on June 30. The girl was unable to obtain the procedure in Ohio due to a newly imposed state ban on abortions at the first detectable “fetal heartbeat.”
After her parents discovered she was pregnant, the law in her home state barred the 10-year-old from receiving an abortion.
The law does not include exceptions for rape or incest. Following the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade, a judge lifted a stay on the ban. This decision triggered a wave of abortion restrictions, including an Ohio law that prohibits abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, with no exceptions for rape or incest.
