In a recent decision, the Nepal government has chosen to ban TikTok, the Chinese-owned social network platform, due to concerns about its negative effects on social harmony. The decision, made in a Cabinet meeting on November 13, will be enforced through the Ministry of Communication and IT.
The move is prompted by criticism of TikTok for promoting hate speech, with 1,647 reported cases of cybercrime on the platform in the past four years. Despite the decision, there are reservations expressed by Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa, who suggests regulating TikTok rather than an outright ban. This decision adds to the challenges faced by TikTok globally, with other countries like India, the U.S., the European Union, and the U.K. banning the application over security concerns. The enforcement of the ban is expected following technical preparations.
