Saudi Arabia’s AlShahrani to undergo surgery in Riyadh. Yasser AlShahrani of Saudi Arabia will have surgery in the capital Riyadh after suffering a severe head injury during his country’s historic 2-1 World Cup victory over Argentina.
The Saudi Arabian Football Federation said in a statement on Tuesday that AlShahrani was hit in the head, chest, and abdomen.
It was also stated that he had undergone all necessary medical examinations but will be kept under observation.
It also confirmed his stable condition.
On Wednesday morning, AlShahrani left Qatar for Riyadh to undergo surgery at the National Guard Hospital.
The 30-year-old was initially taken to Hamad Medical City in Doha, where he underwent a thorough medical examination and spent the night.
During second-half stoppage time at the Lusail Stadium, AlShahrani collided with Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed AlOwais’ knee. AlOwais was seen on the ground in shock after the incident.
AlShahrani attempted to get to his feet but appeared dazed as blood flowed from his nose. After a lengthy delay, he was stretchered away.
The 30-year-old Al-Hilal player had given a heroic performance, largely preventing Argentina’s star-studded team from creating any real chances in the second half.
The game will be remembered as one of the biggest upsets in international football history, with Saudi Arabia becoming the first Asian team to defeat Argentina in a World Cup.
