Bhat-Bhateni was not established as a big supermarket which we see it today .This huge supermarket used to be a small cold store in Kathmandu. He started this store with initial investment of Rs 35000 . Min Bahadur Gurung is the chairman and managing director of the Bhat-Bhateni Group. Gurung, a master’s degree holder in economics, worked as a banker at Nepal Bank Ltd and was stationed in Nepalgunj in his early twenties.
Min B. Gurung started Bhat-Bhateni cold store in 1984 for his wife as he was unable to find a job for his wife. Mr. & Mrs. Min B. Gurung started Bhat-Bhateni in ordinary single shutter. He took a courage to leave his banking job and decided to give his full time to the store.He had the vision to lead Bhat-Bhateni in a full-time capacity following the expansion to a two floor (3,000 sq. ft.) supermarket in 1992.
This ordinary ‘single shutter’ store has since transformed to become Fourteen leading supermarket and departmental stores in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Chitwan, Dharan and Butwal and many other cities.
Today, Bhat-Bhateni has a combined 1 billion sq. ft. sales area across its 22 locations and employs 4,500 full-time employees 95 percent of who are women. With daily sales exceeding NRs. 6.5 Crore (USD 650,000.00), Bhat-Bhateni is also the largest taxpayer in the retail sector in Nepal.
Bhateni is one of Nepal’s most trusted brands, with over 200,000 visitors per day. Bhat-Bhateni, Nepal’s largest retail chain, offers 150,000 goods from 1,500 local and international vendors. Groceries and fresh vegetables; cosmetics and toiletries; a wide selection of international liquor; and a large selection of kitchenware, apparel, sporting goods, toys, and electronics.
