The Ministry of Health and Population confirmed cholera infection in two people in Kathmandu this Sunday. Cholera infected two sisters of age 18 and 23 years respectively from Kathmandu Metropolitan City-28, Bagbazar.
They detected Vibrio cholera 01 Ogawa serotype in the stool of the patients.
Officials at the infectious disease hospital has reported periodic cases of cholera suspected in the valley of late.
Cholera is a highly infectious disease that causes severe diarrhea and vomiting, which causes dehydration. If not treated with in the few hours, it can lead to death. The World Health Organization says cholera is a global threat to public health and an indicator of inequality and a lack of social development.
There is increase in rainfall and disruption in garbage collection in Kathmandu Valley. Ana thus, doctors warn that, this increase the risk of contamination in drinking water sources. And therefore, there is the outbreak of disease like cholera.
Doctors say launching awareness against water borne diseases only is not enough. Ensuring safe drinking water and sanitation are the only ways to save people from dying of water-borne diseases, including cholera.
