Nearly 70 percent water samples in Valley contaminated

Waterborne diseases have become a challenge to control including cholera. Hence, failure to ensure safe drinking water has caused this, official says. At least 12 people tested positive in recent 8 days.

Nearly 70% of drinking has found contaminated with E coli and fecal coli form in Kathmandu valley.

Cholera

The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division started collecting water samples in different parts of Kathmandu valley. After the cholera and diarrhea cases confirmed, they started collecting samples. Water contaminated with microbes found in human faeces is not safe to drink, officials said.

“We have collected samples of drinking water from areas where people have tested positive for cholera,” Kaushal Subedi. “Samples included both bottled (jar) and tap water, which we found not safe for drinking directly.”

Since last Sunday, at least 12 people from various places in Kathmandu Valley have tested cholera. Similarly, they are from Balaju, Bagbazar, Dillibazar, Sanepa, Kapan, Thankot, Khashibazar, Balkhu and Koteshwor.

Vibrio cholera 01 Ogawa serotype confirmed in 12 infected individuals. Cholera is a highly infectious disease that causes severe diarrhea and vomiting. So, if its not treated timely,  it leads to dehydration.  And ultimately death.

Drinking water supplied to households by the state-owned agency. And private companies in jars has always been in question. Experts wonder the uncollected garbage in city for months caused this problem. According to them another reason could be rising cost of living. Which forced them to drink water without boiling.

The chances of spread of waterborne diseases are also high during the monsoon, which has already entered Nepal. Due to poor sanitation they are vulnerable to waterborne diseases. Waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid, hepatitis and cholera. Thousands of people get infected.

After the rise in infected case. Lalitpur municipality has announced to ban over selling street foods.Especially, street food like panipuri and chatpate.
