Newly elected Sri Lanka’s-president takes the oath

Ranil Wickremesinghe, newly elected Sri Lanka’s-president  was sworn in on Thursday, succeeding ousted leader Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Wickremesinghe took the oath of office the day after members of Parliament elected him to the position.

The 73-year-old, six-time prime minister served as interim president after Rajapaksa fled the country and resigned earlier this month. Rajapaksa resigned after months of protests calling for the country’s top leaders to resign in the midst of an economic crisis.

Mr Wickremesinghe( newly elected Sri Lanka’s-president ), who won a parliamentary majority with the support of Rajapaksa’s ruling party. The Sri Lanka People’s Front (SLPP), went out of his way to distance himself from the old guard.

Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the country’s eighth executive president Thursday morning before Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya in Parliament in Colombo. He can now appoint a new Prime Minister.
